Abstract：This summer, Xinjiang ’s power consumption load reached a record high, but the operating conditions of coal power companies have not significantly improved. A person in charge of a coal-fired power company in Urumqi said that as one of the important local power and heat sources, the company has suffered losses for the first time in three consecutive years since its construction in 1958. \"It is not unexpected that Datang\'s coal power plant in Gansu went bankrupt.\" Xinjiang\'s coal power companies are equally worried about their survival.
People in the industry believe that one of the reasons for the deep loss of coal power is the imbalance of the supply and demand structure. The ever-decreasing power demand of the whole society cannot support the rapid growth of installed power generation capacity, and the pressure on excess thermal power capacity is increasing. In addition, in recent years, the cost of new energy power generation has fallen rapidly, and market competitiveness has increased significantly, squeezing the living space of coal power companies.
Since the reform of the power system in 2002, China ’s installed power generation capacity has continued to grow at a rapid rate. During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, the average annual new installed power capacity is about 100 million kilowatts. As of the end of November 2015, the country ’s power generation equipment capacity of 6000 kW and above power plants exceeded 1.4 billion kilowatts, of which thermal power installed capacity was close to 1 billion kilowatts.
On the other hand, since the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, China's total power consumption has seen a farewell to double-digit growth, and has continued to decline. The growth rate in 2015 was only 0.5%, the lowest level since 1978.
Under this circumstance, the pressure of overcapacity in thermal power generation has increased, and the utilization hours have continued to decline. In 2016, it fell to 4,165 hours, the lowest level in half a century.
